Hormosira banksii's Day in the Ocean

from The Ecosystem Engineers by The Ecosystem Engineers

/

about

The brown algae, Hormosira banksii is a pioneer species and major ecosystem engineer that builds habitat in the intertidal areas of the ocean (eg between the deep sea and the sandy beaches!). The algae embryo form on the underside of the mature plants and eventually drop to the ocean floor where rhizoids help attach to the sand and rocks. Known by the knickname of Neptunes Necklace, the bead like structure has a special coating which stops it from drying out in between the tides..- (with apologies for any scientific misconceptions and inaccuracies!)
